Pitchyin
See and fix your Chinese tones
English
See your pitch drawn over the correct tone, with a score and one clear tip per syllable. Single tones are free; Pro adds 390 everyday words, tone pairs and sandhi.
Coming soon to the App Store
Pitchyin shows you what your Mandarin tones really sound like. Say a syllable and your pitch is drawn live over the shape it should have. You get a score for every syllable and one clear tip to fix it.
WHY TONES ARE HARD
In Mandarin, mā, má, mǎ and mà are four different words. Most learners can't hear their own tone mistakes, and speech recognition often guesses the right word anyway, so the errors never get corrected. Pitchyin measures the pitch of your voice directly, so you see exactly where a tone goes wrong.
HOW IT WORKS
- Tap record and say the word. Recording stops by itself when you pause.
- Your pitch curve appears over a shaded band that shows the target contour on the five-level tone scale.
- Get a score from 0 to 100 and specific feedback such as "Start higher", "Dip lower before rising" or "Fall all the way down".
- Hear a reference spoken by your iPhone's built-in Mandarin voice, and replay your own attempt to compare.
- A five-second calibration fits the scale to your own voice, high or low.
DRILLS THAT GO BEYOND SINGLE TONES
49 drill sets with 786 syllables, words and phrases:
- The four tones on 12 common syllables
- Minimal pairs: 64 pairs in 8 sets, same sound, different tone, different meaning
- Tone pairs: all 16 two-syllable combinations in 10 sets, including light neutral endings
- Tone sandhi in 6 sets: two and three third tones in a row, how 一 and 不 change, and doubled words. Pitchyin scores the tone you actually say, not just the one in the dictionary.
- 390 everyday words in 13 themes: greetings and people, food and places, time and numbers, travel, shopping, restaurants, home and family, school, weather, health, feelings, hobbies and work
